You’re experiencing world’s 5th deadliest heatwave ever

Brand-new DELHI: As the death toll in the current heat wave crossed the 2,000 mark, this has actually become the fifth deadliest ever heatwave in the world and the second deadliest in India, according to an international database of disasters.

Weathermen are predicting that there are a few more days left in the ongoing heatwave which has actually killed the most number of people in Andhra Pradesh and Telengana, while affecting large parts of the rest of the country.

The deadliest heatwave on record in India is the 1998 one in which 2,541 people died. The most lethal heatwave in the world was the one that crippled Europe in 2003, killing 71,310 people. These figures are maintained in the Emergency Events Database (EM-DAT) maintained by the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED) based in Brussels, Belgium.

Heatwave: Five things things you must know

Weather expert and founder of Weather Underground Jeff Masters writes that “death tolls from heatwaves are very difficult to estimate, since excess heat is typically not listed as the primary cause of death in cases where the victim has actually a pre-existing condition such as heart or lung disease.” This means that in most cases, especially in India, the actual death toll will be much higher in all the listed events, including the current one.

Researchers of the Ahmedabad Heat Climate Study Group analysed all deaths in Ahmedabad in the 2010 heatwave and compared it to all deaths in the previous year (2009) and the subsequent year (2011) to find out the real number of excess deaths attributable to a heatwave. Their results, published in the journal PLOS-ONE in March 2014 were stunning. While the official death toll due to heatwave conditions was recorded as 50, the study found an excess of 1,344 deaths in 2010 over other years. That’s a 43% spike in deaths due to heatwave conditions, and that too in a city which is used to high temperatures. The group of researchers in this study have since collaborated with civic authorities in Ahmedabad to put in place a system for saving people’s lives in heatwave conditions.

In the list of top ten deadliest disasters, Indian heatwaves figure four times — 1998, 2002, 2003 and 2015. Unsurprisingly, six of the top ten heatwaves in terms of deaths have occurred in the 21st century, which has actually also recorded eight of the ten warmest years ever since records of global temperatures were started being kept. 2014 was tied at the warmest year on record with 1998, and the first quarter of 2015 has actually already been declared the warmest on record. So, global warming and increasing population are contributing to the increasing ferocity of heatwaves.

Heatwave to worsen over the years: Study

According to a study done by researchers from IIT Bombay, TISS and Monash University, Australia, the frequency and intensity of heatwaves is going to increase in the future. In a paper published in the April 2015 issue of the journal Regional Environmental Change, they write “heatwaves are projected to be more intense, have longer durations and occur at a higher frequency and earlier in the year.” Apart from predicting that heatwaves will become more common in south India, the scientists say that “in northern India, the average number of days with extreme heat tension condition during pre-monsoon hot season will reach 30. The intensification of heatwaves might lead to severe heat tension and increased mortality.”

Not all Americans are tourists

Indian outsourcing has actually inspired comments from Jay Leno and a man who is much funnier, George Bush. It has actually unleashed debates and even suicides.

But for sometime now, Americans have been outsourcing themselves to India for survival. It is tough and sometimes a shocking experience.

But they are also discovering that though India churns out lakhs of graduates every year, there are jobs that Americans are unexpectedly better at.

Joining the Indian workforce from his comfy home in Virginia, Ed Cohen, 46, jumped on to the bandwagon eight months ago, as senior vice-president at Satyam Computer Services’ School of Leadership.

Cohen brought his entire family to Hyderabad where they have built a warm, happy home for themselves. Even their dog came along.

Seeing a camel for the first time, Cohen says their dog, “freaked out”. Cohen has actually been trying to speak to Indians in Hindi only, to be answered in English.

Cohen and the other Americans who come to India see a promising monetary opportunity. Indian companies are paying Rs 20-30 lakh per year to middle-management Americans.

When one year’s salary will purchase a nice two-bedroom home in Bangalore, it seems like a lot to an American who would need four year’s pay to purchase one in the States. There are also others who see an opportunity for career advancement.

The National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom) has actually said in its May 2006 Newsline report that the visibly large body of young Indians, “is not directly employable and needs to be transformed into ‘suitable’ offshore talent before it can be used by the country’s technology industries.”

According to technology and market research company Forrester Research, “There are problems finding experienced development leaders, program managers, and domain experts.”

They say that there is a feeding frenzy in India as companies scramble to find senior staff to keep the more complex projects on track.

“We know that Indians working in the US are being offered their US pay if they return to India.” This situation, coupled with job erosion and career plateauing in the States, has actually spurred a rush of working Americans to India.

Kris Lakshmikanth, CEO of Head Hunters India, says he does not have to advertise in America. With 30 emails a month from Americans soliciting the company for work in India, his company’s presence is known through word-of-mouth.

Now, an HIV blocking gel for women

WASHINGTON: Scientists have actually developed a “molecular condom”, which they claim is actually a vaginal gel that would certainly help protect women from contracting the deadly HIV during sexual intercourse.

According to them, before sex, women would certainly have actually to insert the vaginal gel that turns semisolid in the presence of semen, trapping AIDS virus particles in a microscopic mesh so they can’t infect vaginal cells.

“The first step in the complicated process of HIV infection in a woman is the virus diffusing from semen to vaginal tissue. We want to stop that first step. We’ve created the first vaginal gel designed to prevent movement of the AIDS virus. This is unique. There’s nothing like it.

“We did it to develop technologies that can enable women to protect themselves versus HIV without approval of their partner,” said lead scientist Prof Patrick Kiser of the University of Utah.

According to the scientists, due to cultural and socioeconomic factors, women often are unable to negotiate the use of protection along with their partner.

“So we developed a vaginal gel that a woman could insert a few hours before sex and could detect the presence of semen and provide a protective barrier between the vaginal tissue and HIV. We wanted to build a gel to stop HIV from interacting along with vaginal tissue.

“It flows at a vaginal pH, and the flow becomes slower and slower as pH increases, and it begins to act more solid at the pH of semen,” co-scientist Julie Jay said.

The scientists estimate that if all goes well, human examinations of the gel would certainly start in three to five years, and the gel would certainly reach the market in several more years.

The findings of their experiment testing the behaviour of the vaginal gel and showing how it traps AIDS-causing HIV particles are to be published in the upcoming edition of the ‘Advanced Functional Materials’ journal.

Aruna Shanbaug’s attacker lives in Uttar Pradesh, says didn’t rape her

MUMBAI/GHAZIABAD: Aruna Shanbaug’s assailant, Sohanlal Bhartha Valmiki, has been traced to Parpa village of Hapur district near Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh. “I did not rape Aruna… I don’t remember anything from that day,” he told the Marathi daily ‘Sakaal’ whose correspondent found him staying with his family in the UP village which is around 75km from Delhi.

Shanbaug died on May 18, 42 years after being in a vegetative state caused by the brutal sexual assault by Valmiki, then a ward boy with KEM Hospital in Parel. Valmiki was not charged with rape or sexual assault but with attempted murder and robbery and after a seven-year jail term, walked a free man in 1980.

Reports emerging after Aruna’s death indicated he may have shifted to Delhi after his jail term was over, and some reports had said he may have died in 2011. Mumbai police on Friday said they would seek legal opinion on filing a murder case versus him.

Aruna’s death reignites the debate on euthanasia

But Valmiki, now around 70 years old, said he had never shifted to Delhi and claimed that he has been working for more than a decade as a daily wage labourer with a contractor at a power plant, 30km away from his home. “I cycle 30km to work every morning,” he was quoted as saying.

He lives not in his own home but that of his in-laws, with his wife Bimla, two sons Krishna and Ravinder and two daughters. He has a grandson, too. He claimed that he earns only Rs 4,000 a month and has to spend Rs 5,000 every six months for treating an eye ailment. He also has blood pressure issues.

(Locals gathered outside the house of Sohanlal Valmiki in Hapur village, Ghaziabad)

He asked the ‘Sakaal’ correspondent why the issue of rape had come up after all these years. “Khabar toh 42 saal pehele bhi aayi thi, tab bhi usme rape ka zikr nahi tha (News had been reported even 42 years ago, but there was no mention of rape then),” he said.

He said he had heard the news of Shanbaug’s death from a relative in New Delhi.

“Prima facie it seems this old case may not attract any fresh sections as Aruna died of pneumonia,” Mumbai joint commissioner of police Deven Bharti told PTI. But he said that the police would seek legal opinion first and then decide their course of action.

Both of Valmiki’s sons were born in Parpa. After being released from prison, he returned to his native place at Dadupura in Bulandshahr district, the older son, Krishna, told TOI. But there, he got into a dispute with his brothers and came to Parpa, where his in-laws lived.

The sons claimed Valmiki couldn’t have committed so heinous a crime. Krishna alleged that Valmiki had been framed because there was pressure on Mumbai police to crack the case.

Hapur district magistrate Ajay Yadav told TOI he would intervene if Mumbai police sought help. “It is yet to be established what the status of the case is. If Mumbai police contacts the district administration, we will extend our help,” Yadav said.
